Spirit Play didn’t start in a vacuum. It takes its model from a long line of Montessori based religious education programming including Sofia Cavalletti’s Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Jerome Berryman’s Godly Play®, and Joyce Zaugg’s The Children’s Hour. Developed by Rev. Ralph Roberts, Beverly Leute Bruce, and Rev. Dr. Nita Penfold (who was Spirit Play's Director for fifteen years), Spirit Play is a Unitarian Universalist program of religious education that has been in existence since the year 2000, utilized in churches across the North American continent.
